CEO
Selection Criteria/Personal Attributes
Based on a
client’s business planning information, RSI,
Inc. would define the criteria (i. e., the personal, managerial,
technical and experience attributes) that should be used to evaluate a candidate
for the position of Chief Executive Officer (or similar executive level
position) of a proposed new business.
-
For
example, our criteria might attempt to evaluate some of the following
attributes:
-
A Visionary
- - someone who has a real vision of what this kind of business could
be; how it will be on the leading edge of innovative product and service
offerings; how it would differentiate itself from its competitors; how
it would build and leverage its brand; how it would grow extraordinarily
fast in good times and do well in down markets
-
An Entrepreneur
- - at a minimum, the start-up phase of the planned business would
benefit from an “entrepreneur” who has the savvy to make fast,
correct decisions that keep the start up from bogging down from the
glitches that invariably arise in implementation scenarios
-
A Respected
Manager - - someone who can very quickly gain the confidence
and respect of his/her internal staff, suppliers and vendors, and CEOs
and staff of acquired businesses
-
A Shirt-Sleeve
Manager - - someone who has empathy, if not experience with,
the large number of service personnel who will ultimately be the
front-line, customer-contact force of the entity envisioned in your
business plan. This manager cannot be aloof and disconnected from a
hands-on, sometimes down-and-dirty service business
-
A Bottom-Line
(Financial) Manager - - someone who has a good “feel for
numbers” and who immediately has a sense of margins, value, cost of
capital, do-it-yourself vs. outsourcing opportunities, customer and
revenue acquisition costs, etc.
-
A Confident,
Hands-On Delegator - - someone who is always close to all
aspects of the business and who recognizes what he/she doesn’t know
and has the confidence to seek the best available resources to fill the
gap.
-
An Experienced
Business Developer - - The preferred candidate would have
a track record for the successful development of a similar or related
new business. A successful business developer is probably more essential
in the start-up phases than a successful manager of a large, previously
existing business although those skills will be needed in relatively
short order.
-
For
most CEO selection analyses, RSI,
Inc. would expect
to define
25 or more criteria for evaluating a candidate’s preferred attributes.
